THE PROCESS
Outpost 9’s Ryan Lovejoy was a lead camera operator within the filming team for Storror's Roof Culture Asia feature film. Shot in Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Seoul for over two weeks each. The focus was not only on the physical feats but also on exploring the mental and physical preparation of the athletes, aiming to highlight the dramatic and sometimes controversial nature of parkour. The guerilla-style method of production allowed for spontaneous, unscripted footage but came with significant risksas the team navigated through cityscapes to film high-stake sequences.
Filming parkour at height means a systematic breakdown of all variables is essential before every jump. Here Max from the Storror team checks the grip on a wall he is choreographing a sequence on. The athletes were already well-versed in their own safety protocols through their parkour training. However, the film crew also needed to be physically fit and mentally prepared to handle the stress and unpredictability of the shoot. Before any filming, the team would scout locations to understand potential hazards, escape routes, and safe spots for both the athletes and the film crew. This planning helped in anticipating risks and preparing for them.
